Sterne Students March in the Chinese New Year Parade for the First Time

Every year, literally at our front door, the city sets up a big grandstand for the Chinese New Year Parade, cementing a connection we feel every day with our Chinatown neighbors. The San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade is the oldest and largest parade of its kind in the country and, for the first time, Sterne students marched in the parade this year!
Ninth grader Jaden marched with the St. Mary's Chinese School, which holds their Saturday School on the Sterne campus. Sixth grader Charles is a member of the St. Mary's Drum and Bell Corps, which also practices every weekend at Sterne. These students were proud to represent both St. Mary's and Sterne at this exciting event. Charles was eager to report that Representative Nancy Pelosi stopped the St. Mary's group to congratulate them on a job well done. Charles' mom Virginie expressed a hope that more Sterne students join the Drum and Bell Corps, because it's been such a great experience for Charles.
Head of School Melissa Myers commented, "Sterne's participation in the parade is a point of pride, particularly because we have always been part of the preparations (with the grandstand located on our front doorstep!) but never part of the actual parade. We are so proud to finally connect, and we hope to continue participating in this important cultural event."
Our participation is particularly meaningful this year, in light of our DEIB initiative of connecting with our Chinatown neighbors (click here to read more about this year's DEIB initiative).
We are looking forward to continuing this initiative in the year ahead and beyond.
